Hi, I’m Markus Baumgartner, a passionate athlete and coach with both academic knowledge and competitive experience.
I’m dedicated to helping athletes and fitness enthusiasts unlock their full potential – whether you’re training for a race, working to improve your overall fitness, or striving to perform at your highest level!
_my journey
I grew up in South Tyrol, surrounded by mountains, where I played football, ice hockey, and competed in skiing. In secondary school, I had to focus on just one sport and chose football, but soon realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. After quitting, I found myself without a clear direction, until I gradually began exploring fitness.
I started running and quickly developed a passion for endurance sports. I also took up cycling, especially after working at a bike rental shop, where I had the opportunity to borrow bikes and explore the mountains around South Tyrol. It wasn’t long before I bought my first road bike.
In addition to endurance sports, I became passionate about strength training in the gym. Fitness has always been a central part of my life, and I enjoy continually pushing my limits through strength and conditioning.
I am a certified ski instructor and love skiing and ski touring in the mountains. But I also enjoy playing golf, which allows me to unwind and challenge myself in a different way.
When I moved to Vienna for my studies, I participated in the 2022 Wings for Life World Run and completed 29 km. This was a pivotal moment when I realized that my studies in engineering weren’t the right path for me. I decided to finish my degree while pursuing fitness certifications. That summer, I returned home to coach group classes and personal training, and started writing training plans for friends, discovering my passion for coaching.
In 2024, I returned to the Wings for Life World Run and achieved 43 km. Around the same time, I was preparing for my first Hyrox competition. My debut in Rimini went well (1:08), and just four months later, I improved my time by 7 minutes in Milan, qualifying for the 2025 Hyrox World Championships (age group).
With a growing passion for sports and performance, I enrolled in a Master’s program in sport and training science in Vienna. I now coach Hyrox group classes, create training programs, and am currently writing my Master’s thesis on the the muscle oxygenation response during biceps curls using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).
Over the past four years, I’ve dedicated myself to training science and coaching, combining my education, personal experience, and passion for progress to guide athletes towards their goals.

_my coaching philosophy
My coaching philosophy is shaped by my personal experience and professional background. Through numerous internships with high-level coaches in competitive sports, I’ve learned a lot. However, I’ve often found that many approaches focus too much on general fitness and not enough on pushing athletes to their limits. In my view, some coaches take a too-cautious approach, making training too easy for athletes who should be striving to reach their full potential.
I believe performance athletes must constantly push their boundaries and evolve. At the same time, it’s essential to understand the sport’s specific demands, such as optimal muscle mass and endurance capacity.
I’m committed to ongoing communication with my athletes. I’m here to support, adjust training plans, and ensure everything stays on track. Each plan is tailored to the athlete’s individual goals and weaknesses, starting with a detailed initial session to ensure we’re on the right path from the start.
_what makes me different
My coaching stands out through my commitment to hands-on involvement. I believe being actively present in every training session is key to refining techniques, correcting mistakes, and ensuring progress. That’s why every training package includes at least one 1:1 session per week, providing immediate feedback, adjusting plans, and ensuring athletes stay on track.
